The first, and one of the main, scientific and technical tasks in geomechanics is the quantitative evaluation of the mechanical characteristics and initial stresses in a rock mass, including oil-, gas- and water-bearing strata, which must be used as initial data for all subsequent tasks linked not only to geomechanical but also to hydrodynamic and gas-dynamic processes.
